Bruce Butterfield, APR, Fellow, ASAE and PRSA

Bruce Butterfield has decades of strategic management and public relations experience working primarily through the association sector in the US, European Union, and Asia. He has served in executive capacities with seven national organizations in the food, housing and insurance industries and the legal profession.

He founded or cofounded four national organizations and created the capacity to incubate others. He has developed advocacy campaigns at the national and local level in areas of public health, product safety, industry promotion, transportation, standards development, and professional certification and licensure. In addition, Butterfield has created and managed numerous national public awareness campaigns on behalf of industry clients. Thanks to his association experience, Butterfield possesses the uncommon capacity to identify and implement strategies that promote entire industries and not just the narrow interests of specific enterprises.

As former chairman of The Forbes Group and current Senior Counselor, he guides organizations through strategic thinking, planning, implementation and organizational design and conducts leadership research. He is particularly interested in how the emerging Millennial generation, born after 1982, will change society, the workplace and organizational design.

In addition, Butterfield has developed national and global strategies to assist several industries and professions adapt to the structural demands and market pressures of new technology adoption including those in the healthcare, transportation, hospitality and tourism, manufacturing, and construction sectors.

Butterfield achieved the Certified Association Executive (CAE)designation and is a member and Fellow of the American Society of Association Executives and an Accredited member and Fellow of the Public Relations Society of America. He is a past member of the ASAE Healthcare Community Committee. He is a member of the Association Forum of Chicagoland and has served on its Professional Practices Committee. He co-created the Forum's Key 25 project to look at the future of associations. He is a past member of the American Association of Medical Society Executives and has served on its Task Force on the Future and the 2010 Conference Planning Committee.

He is past president of the National Capital Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, past chairman of the national Association Section and a former member of the Chicago and National Capital Chapter boards of directors. He was inducted into the National Capital Chapter Hall of Fame in 1999.

Butterfield has won the Gold Quill Award for excellence in public affairs programs from the International Association of Business Communicators; the Thoth Award and Thoth Certificate of Excellence for public affairs programs from the National Capital Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America; the Gold Leaf Award from "Family Circle" Magazine; and the Monument Award for communications of the Greater Washington Society of Association Executives. He was named one of the top association public relations executives in the country by "Public Relations Quarterly" magazine.

His education includes a Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University and postgraduate institutes at Yale, Syracuse and New York University.
